The Illenau in Achern has undergone an impressive transformation. The historic complex, dating from 1842, has been carefully renovated and developed into a modern cultural and conference centre. The former chapel is particularly fascinating: once even used as a cinema, it has now been converted into a versatile event hall \u2013 complete with a stage, modern technology and a flexible raised floor. The historic stained-glass windows have also been restored in accordance with conservation guidelines, whilst new ceiling structures, structural reinforcement and barrier-free access have made the building fit for the future. A fine example of how historic architecture and contemporary use can come together harmoniously.<\/p>\n

During the refurbishment of this special property, the specialist planners focused on several key requirements, particularly when planning the ceilings: low suspension heights, the lowest possible system weight, high standards for room acoustics, and efficient heating and cooling solutions \u2013 all within a visually compelling design. Requirements that are perfectly suited to our system solutions.<\/p>\n

Although this was a relatively small-scale project, it was extremely demanding in terms of both technology and planning. A particular challenge was posed by the listed building regulations, whose requirements had to be strictly adhered to at every stage of the planning and implementation process. The structural conditions called for precise coordination, well-thought-out detailed planning and a high level of technical expertise.<\/p>\n

We were commissioned to design and supply bespoke ceiling and wall elements for this project. The task was to reconcile modern technical requirements with the sensitive treatment of the historic building fabric. By utilising our lightweight and high-performance systems, both the acoustic and thermal requirements were optimally met \u2013 with minimal intervention in the existing structure. The result is an all-round successful project that impressively demonstrates how existing buildings can be sustainably enhanced through innovative solutions. It confirms once again the potential inherent in careful renovation \u2013 when technology, design and heritage conservation work together harmoniously.<\/p>\n
